At Festival Foods, we are committed to providing our guests with quality products and superior service. The seafood department exemplifies this with its Sustainable Seafood Mission Statement. This promises not only to serve our guests with quality products, but to also move towards the highest standards for our seafood quality and its environment.
As part of this mission, Festival Foods has partnered with the Monterey Bay Aquarium® Seafood Watch® Program, which is committed to supporting programs that ensure we’ll have enough fish in the world to supply our store for many years. We’re not just talking about any fish. We’re talking about quality, sustainably and harmoniously raised fish. We’re talking about Verlasso® Salmon, which is the only farm-raised salmon rated as a “Good Alternative” by the Monterey Bay Aquarium Seafood Watch Program. (As if the heart-healthy omega-3 fatty acids weren’t a good enough reason to eat more salmon!)
What does it mean to have a “harmoniously raised fish”? It all comes down to responsible, innovative and natural farming practices that produce the healthiest salmon possible. For starters, Verlasso uses 75% fewer wild-caught feeder fish in their feed, which reduces dependency on wild seafood populations and reduces depletion of ocean resources. In addition, Verlasso is based in Patagonia, a region in the southern part of South America, where the water is free of toxins. The fish have lots of room to grow in spacious pens, which also benefits the environment. The fish are grown and harvested humanely to ensure the salmon are as healthy as possible. The pens are left empty after each harvest period so the water can rejuvenate. It’s all about creating a balance – or harmony – with the fish, the consumers and the environment.
Verlasso is truly setting the standard for salmon farming in the future. Their practices result in a delicious fish with a bright and delicate flavor. Choosing Verlasso ensures that you receive a premium salmon, and promotes the preservation of ocean life.
