I am a fanatic for Asian stir fry and have called for takeout numerous times. But, because I have the urge to master restaurant cuisine, I decided to take the risk of recreating one of my very favorite dishes - Beef & Broccoli! I stocked up on all of the Asian staple ingredients: soy sauce, sriracha, hoisin and sesame oil, and am ready to take on the conquest! In addition to our staple Asian ingredients, we need the perfect slab of beef! Because we are doing a quick stir fry, we need a tender cut of meat, such as flank or skirt steak (which is also traditional in Asian cuisine). For the broccoli, I’d suggest fresh florets, but if you have a bag of frozen at home, it’ll work just fine!

To start off, mix up the stir fry sauce! Combine sherry, soy sauce, honey and beef broth. Whisk in corn starch until combined. Stir in hoisin and Sriracha sauce until you have a smooth consistency. Set aside. I know there are numerous ingredients in our sauce, but they work so perfectly together, that you don’t want to skip any of them - and if you don’t have them on hand, you can always use a bottle of stir fry sauce!

Now for the stir-frying! Heat canola oil in a wok or large skillet to medium-high heat. When the pan is hot, add garlic and ginger and cook for 30-60 seconds. Add sliced beef and cook until browned. Remove beef and set aside.

Add broccoli florets to the hot pan. Sauté about 1 minute, stirring frequently. Add ¼ cup water and cover the skillet for 2-3 minutes to allow the broccoli to steam. Remove the lid and continue cooking for 60 seconds on high until most water has evaporated.

Sesame oil is essential for making all of the Asian flavors come together! Go ahead and add the oil to the pan. Toss the beef back in with the broccoli, along with the sauce mixture and cook about 2 minutes, until sauce has thickened. We want all of our ingredients immersed in that rich, beefy soy goodness from the sauce! Serve on a bed of deliciously tender rice noodles. Take that, take out!

  • 2 Tbsp. dry sherry
  • 2 Tbsp. low sodium soy sauce
  • 2 tsp. honey
  • ½ cup low sodium beef broth
  • 2 Tbsp. corn starch
  • 2 Tbsp. hoisin sauce
  • 2 tsp. Sriracha or ½ tsp. crushed red pepper
  • 1 Tbsp. canola oil
  • 1 Tbsp. fresh ginger, minced or paste
  • 2 tsp. fresh garlic, minced or paste
  • 1 lb. boneless flank steak, cut across grain into thin slices
  • 4 cups chopped broccoli florets
  • ¼ cup water
  • 1 Tbsp. sesame oil
  • 2 cups rice noodles, cooked
  • ⅓ cup sliced green onions {optional}  


  1. To make sauce, combine sherry, soy sauce, honey and beef broth. Whisk in corn starch until combined.  Stir in hoisin and Sriracha sauce.  Set aside.
  2. Heat canola oil in wok or large skillet to medium-high heat. When pan is hot, add garlic and ginger pastes; cook for 30-60 seconds.  Add sliced beef and cook until browned.  Remove beef from pan; set aside.
  3. Add broccoli florets to the hot pan. Sauté about 1 minute, stirring.  Add ¼ cup water and place top on skillet for 2-3 minutes.  Remove lid and continue to cook 60 seconds on high until most water has evaporated.
  4. Add sesame oil to the pan; add beef back in to the pan along with the sauce mixture and cook about 2 minutes, until sauce has thickened.
  5. Serve over rice noodles and garnish with sliced green onions, if desired.
