It’s been about a year since many of us have had a fresh picked Wisconsin apple so I am excited that Wisconsin Apple season is starting soon. Festival Foods will have all of your favorite local apples available and I’ve been told that our cooler nights have bought on beautiful color. The apples are also larger in size this year. At Festival Foods we work with a few different local orchards and I just spoke to the folks at Sunrise Orchard in Gays Mills, located in southwestern Wisconsin for an update. They are a family owned business that stretches over 4 generations and 75 years. They grow about 125,000 bushels of apples annually on approximately 225 acres. During harvest season, they employ more than 100 workers to bring their great tasting apples to market. The folks at Sunrise Orchard tell me that Paula Red apples will be the first variety picked and we should have them available in the store around September 1st. After that we can expect McIntosh apples around September 12th and then Cortland apples around September 19th. My favorite, Honeycrisp apples, will be available around September 16th. I can’t wait to take a bite from the first apple of the season!
