If you asked 100 kindergartners what they want to be when they grow up, you probably aren’t going to hear, “I want to be a retail grocer”! At that age, kids are more likely to say they want to be a fireman, police officer, or doctor. And when those same kids get a bit older and start to consider careers they are often drawn to the exciting opportunities in technology-related fields.
But when you think about it, Festival Foods often times is a first choice for part-time employment when kids are still in school and looking to earn some spending money. We understand that this is often the young person’s first job and we do everything we can to use the opportunity. We like to think that we influence our associates in a positive way and help them become more friendly and outgoing. It’s also a great time for us to show them more about the grocery industry and help them realize that they can make a career out of it!
Grocery retail is actually quite exciting because every day is a new day in retail! It’s fast-paced and never boring, you get to interact with a variety of people every day, you get to use problem solving skills, and you always have the opportunity to put a smile on someone’s face. Festival is a place where you can make a difference with a positive, can-do attitude. There are so many of us at Festival – me, Frank Abnet, Marlin Greenfield, Nick Arlt, Tad Comeau, and many others – that have grown up in the business and have become addicted to the adrenaline rush of the constantly changing environment. It’s unlike any other and we love it!
So, if you are a person with high energy, a passion for excellence, a willingness to serve others, and enjoy a fast-paced environment where no one day is like the other you should seriously consider a career in the grocery industry!
