This past week I participated in the About Me Card program that took place at Viterbo University in La Crosse. The event introduced the program, developed by Joe Kiedinger of Prophit Marketing, to local businessmen and women in the La Crosse area. Joe asked me to be part of the event’s discussion panel because the About Me Card program is one that we’ve embraced here at Festival Foods and ’ve seen the positive effects the program can have on the relationships within a company. After the initial round of prepared questions, Joe opened it up for the audience to ask questions. One of the attendees stood up and said, “I love your store and I love your people. How do you get associates, especially younger associates, to be as good as they are? Does the About Me Card program play into that?” I explained how the program fosters an atmosphere of respect and appreciation for our teammates as individuals, which is a key part of the Servant Leadership culture we have at Festival. After I had completed my response, my dad stood up from his seat in the audience to say a few words in response to the original question. I’m so glad he did because while I’ve heard this response before, I’m thankful for the reminder. My dad told the attendees that the parents of our good, young associates deserve the credit. We teach them the skills needed to work in our Festival stores but they come to us with the positive “can do” attitude and enthusiasm that makes them great Festival associates. I couldn’t agree more! So if you are the parent of a Festival associate, I hope you will pat yourself on the back for raising a great young adult who pays it forward to all who they come in contact with at our Festival stores. Great associates are what has, and always will, set Festival apart!
