Last Saturday evening I grilled a pound of Fresh Norwegian Salmon fillets on the grill. I’ve never really liked the taste of salmon before but I wanted to give it another shot. Like most folks, I’m trying to eat healthier and salmon is very good for you—it’s high in Omega 3s.
I turned my gas grill to medium heat for 5 minutes before I started. I lightly seasoned the meat side of the salmon with a coarse ground steak seasoning. I placed the salmon meat side down and cooked it for 5 minutes. I then flipped it over to the skin side and cooked it another 5 minutes. I took a spatula and slid it between the skin and the meat; removing the meat portion away from the skin. I slightly seasoned the skin side of the meat and placed back down on the grill for an additional 2 minutes. The salmon turned out perfect and tasted very good!
Now, we’re planning another salmon meal in the next couple of weeks! I especially can’t wait until the Copper River Salmon are in season, which should be the third week in May.
The Copper River is located 150 miles East of Anchorage, Alaska. It flows into the North Gulf of Alaska and is home to the famous Copper River Salmon. The river itself is 300 miles of glacier-carved waters, and its elevation drops 3,600 feet along the way, making it one of the fastest flowing rivers in the country.
Copper River produces some of the richest, best tasting wild salmon in the world—King (Chinook), Sockeye (Red), and Coho (Silver). The salmon that originate there are noted for their firm, bright red flesh, and delicious flavor due to extra oils and fats.
The salmon season begins in mid-May and runs through September. Kings run through mid-June, Sockeyes continue through early August, while in late July the Coho begin to run until September.
We will be teaming up with a company called Copper River Salmon Company and they will be able to offer us the fresh, when in season, and frozen, when out of season, so you will be able to purchase this excellent salmon all year round!
Stay tuned and look for this salmon coming to all of our stores later this May!
