I am excited that summer is finally on its way to Wisconsin so we can all get outside and enjoy the fresh air and warm sun. It’s just in time because my kids were really starting to go crazy after being stuck inside all winter. Summer also brings great stuff to the produce department like sweet and juicy, peaches, nectarines, and other delicious soft fruit. Look for the early varieties of peaches and nectarines to be in our stores the week of May 23rd. Like many fruits, the first of the season will taste pretty good, but the flavor and size gets better every week as the season progresses into the best eating varieties. By June 13th we should be into the tree ripened / pre-conditioned peaches and nectarines. This is the truly flavorful and juicy soft fruit. Plums are a little later maturing than peaches and nectarines. We expect our first plums around June 6th but their season won’t peak until about the first week in July. You can expect apricots in the stores starting around May 27th to May 30th. This year, Festival is proud to offer Summeripe Tree Fruit. Summeripe is a family owned and operated grower in California’s San Joaquin Valley. I believe that they offer us some of the best tasting varieties available. Summeripe is constantly developing new varieties and only 1 in every 1000 evaluated will make their flavor profile.
