We all know how much I love recreating takeout dishes at home. This may be my favorite recreation of all time, friends. This is a super fun version of Sesame Chicken that is extra delicious and extra nutritious. Who said good-for-you can’t taste great?

Your family will think you ordered this from the restaurant down the street, so you’ll have some convincing to do, but nonetheless, everyone will be asking for more! I am so excited to share with you how to make the sauce for this sesame chicken, because it’s anything but traditional. The secret ingredient is (drum roll please...) DATES! How about that? I just couldn’t believe that dates could make such an amazing sesame chicken sauce. But it’s true, folks. It’s delicious. And simple. 

The first step to make the sauce is soaking the dates in ½ cup hot water for at least 30 minutes. Once they are soft, remove the pits and discard. Add the soft dates and soaking water to a food processor with the soy sauce (or tamari for a gluten free option), rice wine vinegar, garlic and ginger; puree until very smooth. Set aside.

Next, heat the oil in a wok or large skillet to medium-high heat. Add the onions and saute 2-3 minutes, until soft and starting to brown. I start almost every savory dish with sautéed onions because it makes the dish super flavorful.

While the onions cook, combine the flour, a dash of salt and pepper and chili powder in a shallow dish. Add the cubed chicken and toss to coat. For a gluten free substitution, use corn starch instead of flour.

Add chicken to the hot wok with the onions and saute until brown on all sides. Pour date sauce and chicken broth into the pan and reduce the heat to medium. Allow chicken and sauce to simmer for 8-10 minutes, covered.

Add the mango chunks and simmer an additional 5 minutes, covered.

Serve with cooked, fluffy Jasmine rice and garnish with sesame seeds and sliced green onions. I promise you will never crave takeout sesame chicken again!

Sesame Chicken with Mango

Ingredients:

  • 15 medjool dates
  • ½ cup hot water
  • ¾ cup low sodium soy sauce {or tamari to make gluten free}
  • ¼ cup rice wine vinegar
  • 3 cloves garlic
  • 1 inch piece fresh ginger, peeled
  • 1-2 Tbsp. canola oil
  • ½ yellow onion, sliced
  • ¼ cup flour {or corn starch, or gluten free flour to make gluten free}
  • Dash coarse salt and ground black pepper
  • 1 tsp. chili powder
  • 1 ½ lbs. boneless, skinless chicken breast, cubed
  • ½ cup low sodium chicken broth
  • 16 oz. bag frozen mango chunks
  • 2 cups cooked Jasmine rice, for serving
  • Sesame seeds and sliced green onion, for garnish  

Directions:

  1. Place dates and hot water in a bowl and soak for at least 30 minutes, until soft. Remove the pits and discard.
  2. In a food processor or blender, puree soaked and pitted dates and their soaking water, soy sauce, rice wine vinegar, garlic and ginger. Set aside.
  3. Heat oil in a wok or large skillet set on medium-high. Add the onions and saute 2-3 minutes, until softened and starting to brown.
  4. Combine flour, salt, pepper and chili powder in a shallow bowl or pie plate. Toss chunks of chicken breast in the flour mixture until coated. Set aside.
  5. Add coated chicken breast chunks to the hot wok and saute until outside is browned. Pour date sauce and chicken broth in to the pan with the chicken and reduce heat to medium; allow to simmer for 8-10 minutes, covered. Add mango chunks and simmer 5 additional minutes, covered.
  6. Serve over rice and garnish with sesame seeds and sliced green onion.
