When it comes to apples there are a lot of choices out there. I’ve heard that there are about 2,500 known varieties of apples grown in the U.S. and around 7,000 varieties worldwide, but not all of these varieties are grown commercially. To make your choice easier, at Festival we only carry between 10 and 15 of the very best varieties. This still leaves a good number to choose from. Each type of apple has its own special characteristics. That’s why, to help you in your decision, we now have apple “Flavor Profile” sheets posted by most of the varieties of apples. These informational signs will give you a good idea of what kind of flavor to expect from each variety and what each is best suited for. Here is an example: Fuji Apples: The Fuji has a firm texture when baked. It’s known for its syrupy sweetness and is excellent for salads. Flavor Profile: Fresh and sophisticated flavor, super sweet with slight spiciness and hints of savory earthy character, quite juicy and aromatic. If you still have trouble deciding on an apple, please feel free to ask a produce associate for a sample. We will gladly bring out a slice for you to taste so your shopping trip is made a bit easier.
