I look forward to Spring every year because it means another great baseball season is just around the corner. Spring also means that those of us living in Wisconsin can hit the streets and run outside again. I recently ran in the Boston Marathon and what a beautiful day it was! On the morning of the race, runners gathered in the Boston Commons at 6:30 am where we boarded buses and were driven to the start line located in Hopkinton, a suburb conveniently located about 26 miles from downtown. Just prior to the 10:00 am race start, two F-15s flew over and then we were underway on our 3.5 hour jaunt into Boston. I was surprised to see so many people out to support the runners; there was never a time when you didn’t have onlookers cheering for you from the roadside. It was a truly awesome experience and I feel fortunate to be healthy enough to participate in an event like this. I am always encouraging our Festival associates to stay active and through Festival’s recent participation in the Live Healthy America campaign they did just that. The campaign focuses on being active and eating healthy, with weight loss being the pleasant side effect of both. We recently wrapped up our 100 Day Live Healthy America Challenge and the numbers are amazing. We had 500 of our Festival associates register to participate on 75 teams from our 16 locations - thirteen stores, one banquet facility, and two support offices. During the challenge, participants received weekly emails with recipes and nutritional advice, logged nearly 32,000 hours of activity, and lost a total of 3,519 pounds! One extraordinary group that I’d like to acknowledge is the “Meatballz” team from our Marshfield Festival Foods store, led by team captain Gordie Rundle, Jr. The 5 member team averaged 12.84% weight loss and logged an average of 96 hours of activity per person! Way to go guys! Eating healthy and staying active are lifestyle choices and I hope the 100 Day Live Healthy America Challenge gave participants the jump start they needed to choose this lifestyle. It’s all about being the healthiest you can be - for yourself and for your loved ones. If you haven’t made the change yet it’s not too late – visit http://www.livehealthyamerica.org/ and get started today!
