I love living in Wisconsin and I love the people that live here as well! It’s funny, everyone once in a while, during casual conversation, I hear someone say, “It’s 30 degrees out and snowing… close your eyes for five minutes and when you open them, it will be 70 degrees and sunny!” So true this year and I have a feeling that the nice summer weather will be here sooner than you think.
When I think summer, I think of all of the great summer drinks that will be available. And when I think summer drinks, I think tequila. But not just any tequila, I think of one of the better tequilas I have had in a while: Familia Camarena. This relatively new release (not even a year in the market yet) has definitely caught my eye. This is a 100% Agave Azul (or blue agave) is made from only the best agave plants coming from the best producing area, Jalisco, Mexico. If there are any tequila aficionado’s out there, you know that 100% Agave Azul tequila’s from Jalisco are awesome. Familia Camarena has two different types out, Silver and Reposado. The Silver is clear with a pure, platinum sheen. Familia Camarena 100% Blue Agave Silver Tequila shows notes of rich toasted agave and fresh green herbs. Exceptionally soft and smooth on the palate, their Silver Tequila exhibits hints of sweet vanilla, savory brown spices and black pepper with a graceful, warming finish. The Reposado is great as well. Reposado means "to rest." They let their Familia Camarena 100% Blue Agave Reposado Tequila rest in American oak barrels for 60 days before bottling. The aging process lends a touch of soft spice to the natural sweetness of the agave in their Reposado Tequila. The result is a smooth, refined barrel aged Tequila with an elegant, robust finish. Sorry, I digress. I got caught up in the great taste profile of Familia Camarena, I lost my train of thought with some of the summer drinks I have had. I recently wanted to find some different recipes to use with Tequila. You always have the staple of Margaritas and also on the rocks (really good chilled with a lemon on the bottom of a rocks glass!), but I wanted to find some more unique. Thank goodness Familia Camarena has a great website (http://www.tequilacamarena.com ) that has some very good and unique recipes. I particularly enjoyed the Represado Paloma (tequila, grapefruit juice, and club soda) and the Orchard (Apple liqueur, tequila, sour mix, and lemon-lime soda). These are just a couple of the different recipes on their website and it definitely opened my eyes to the versatility of tequila and some amazing drinks that can be made with it. When you are thinking summer thoughts and looking forward to a nice cool drink on a hot day, make sure you stop by your local Festival Foods and pick up a bottle of Familia Camarena Tequila. Not only do I think you will enjoy it, but I also think you will be surprised on how great it taste for the affordable price. You better buy 2!
