Cobia is a high quality, tropical marine white fish native to the Caribbean. The swift currents and pristine quality of the open ocean produce cleaner, healthier, faster-growing and tastier fish.
The fishery we get this cobia, Open Blue, is pretty cool too! It’s a pioneer in deep water, open ocean mariculture – a fully submersible SeaStations situated 8 miles offshore are designed to withstand the toughest ocean conditions such as strong currents, high wind speeds and wave heights.
Based 8-10 miles offshore, Open Blue’s farming operations are fully submerged at depths of up to 250 feet, Open Blue is a pioneer and the world’s leader in raising fish in the open ocean. Situated in a protected no-take zone of 2,500 acres of water, this pristine natural environment is home only to Open Blue and indigenous marine species including magnificent whale sharks!
In fact, the Open Blue farm in Panama has become the first cobia producer in the world certified to the Aquaculture Stewardship Council (ASC) standard. To attain certification, the farm was assessed by an independent auditor against a set of robust requirements stipulated by the ASC Seriola and Cobia Standard.
